Community Guidelines Things to know when you are at the Women's Center
Welcome to the Women's Center, a place for mutual support, learning, healing, nourishment, activism, and more. The Center is a shared and public space for all women and their children for use during open hours. Please read and follow these guidelines to keep your and other women's experience here a pleasant one.
Women's Center Guidelines
- This is a space free from drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Women who smoke are asked to do so far away from our front and back doors and to throw away the butts appropriately.
- Animals are not allowed in the building, except working dogs.
- All women who come to the Center have the right to have their personal stories kept confidential. Please do not share the stories you hear here at the Center anywhere outside the Center.
- Always care, be respectful of and considerate with everyone, regardless of differences. All of us have a responsibility to be open to feedback and discussion without resorting to verbal or physical intimidation. Physical violence is not tolerated.
- Treat everything here with care, conservation, and appreciation.
- To protect the health of others and prevent disease or injuries, we ask you to keep yourself and everything at the Center as sanitary as possible.
- Please be aware of personal hygiene so that body odor won't be offensive to anyone sharing the space.
- This is a space free from strong scents and avoidable chemicals. We ask that all women who come to the Center be responsible for not wearing perfumes or using strongly scented products.
- Please keep your noise level and actions to a reasonable standard in all public spaces.
- The Women's Center is not a shelter and cannot accommodate overnight visits. This includes not staying over in the backyard. We make no exceptions.
- All visitors are expected to leave promptly and agreeably at our closing time and respect volunteers who close the Center. Defiance and lack of cooperation will not be tolerated.
Personal items are your responsibility.
- Please do not ask volunteers or staff to watch them, and make sure your belongings are not in anyone's way during your visit to the Center.
- Personal belongings left overnight on the Center property will be placed in the trash.
Room use:
- You can spend time in a room when it is not being used. Please check the room schedule on the front door before using the room and make sure you leave at least 30 minutes before a group is scheduled to use it.
- Leave the room as it was when you entered it.
- Turn off lights (and fans in the summer) when you leave the room. Close windows if it is cold outside.
Respecting the Space
- Ideas for décor changes are welcome but the premises may not be altered without prior consent from the board and staff.
- If you have a flier you would like posted, please give it to the volunteer and she will post it.
- Please clean up after yourself.
- Donations of tea, coffee, cream, sugar, fresh food, etc. are truly appreciated.
Guideline Violation
- If someone is violating one of our guidelines in your presence, we encourage you to respectfully and quietly point the guideline out to the woman.
- If you don't feel that you can do this, please let the volunteer staffer on duty (on the first floor) know about the issue.
- The volunteer will respectfully remind the woman about the policies and clearly identify which behavior must change. The volunteer would tell the woman that if she doesn't comply, we will have to ask her to leave the Center.
- If needed, the Center Coordinator will discuss the possible consequences of guideline violation with the woman.
- We strive to practice a non-violent approach in response to challenges among ourselves. However, under rare critical circumstances, the police may be informed to ensure overall safety.
Suggestions
Your ideas and feedback are most welcome. There is a feedback box to the right of the front door, or you can email board@cambridgewomenscenter.org. Your collaboration is truly appreciated.
