Community Guidelines

The Women's Center is a multi-racial, multi-cultural community organization for women. We define women as anyone who identifies themselves and chooses to be identified by others full-time as a woman. Our community guidelines are designed to promote inclusion, safety, and multiculturalism.

We work hard to maintain premises that are welcoming, well organized, and reflective of our diversity and respect for each other.

Guidelines
  • By law, smoking is prohibited within the building.
  • Women must clean up after themselves when using the Center.
  • If a woman wants to post information pertinent to women or women's issues, we ask that she see the staffer on the first floor. The staffer will see that postings are placed in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Comments that are offensive to groups of women are not tolerated. Women who speak negatively about other groups of women will be challenged regarding their comments and/or asked to leave the premises.
  • Women must be fully clothed while in the building.
  • Drug use and the drinking of alcohol are not permitted on the premises.
  • While the Center encourages discussion that leads to a broader understanding of issues impacting women; physical fighting, yelling, intimidating and threatening behavior is not tolerated.
  • The Center does not have the capacity to provide storage. Personal items found stored on the premises will be placed in the trash.
  • The Women's Center assists women in obtaining shelter. However the Center is not a shelter and cannot accommodate overnight visits for women. We make no exceptions.
  • We ask that all women respect the privacy and limits of other women at the Center.
  • We ask that women using the Center support women who are mothers by respecting their boundaries with their children.
  • The Women's Center childcare room is off limits to women other than mothers whose children are participating in childcare or art classes.
  • To protect the health of others and prevent injuries, the Center requires that women wear shoes, sandals, or boots while on the premises.
  • Certain areas of the building are designated as quiet space or, alternately, as community space to welcome women and to accommodate their various needs. We ask that women respect the rules applied to each space within the Center.
  • The Women's Center has a small, very busy staff. We ask that women refer to the first floor staffer with any questions or concerns. If the staffer cannot adequately address concerns, a message may be left for one of the full time staff people.
  • Each group or program within the Center has a set of guidelines. We ask that women respect all group and program criteria/guidelines.
  • The Center provides coffee, tea, and some food on the premises. Those items are for use while in the building only, unless otherwise noted on the package or container.
  • Deliberate destruction of Women's Center property is cause to be banned from the Center.
  • Formal and informal committees work on the Women's Center décor. Ideas for decorating are welcome but the premises may not be altered without prior consent from the staff or appropriate committee.
  • The Women's Center yard is not available for groups or parties without prior consent of the staff.
  • Animals are not allowed in the building, except for those clearly identified with tags as providing a service to a woman with a disability.
Note: Women’s Center Guidelines are subject to change and guidelines are not limited to the aforementioned list
